A central part of the German Jordanian University is the mandatory German Year, in which every student initially spends a semester at a German partner university. The experience of those who are currently in their year in Germany is valuable.
Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences is pleased to welcome 15 students from Jordan this semester. These include students Baraah Maaitah, Baylasan Alfukaha, Domianah Dababneh and Faisal Abdallah from the fields of logistics, energy technology and translation studies. During their German Year, they attend courses such as “Renewable Energies” and “Applications of Technical Communication” and thus have the opportunity to consolidate and expand their professional and language skills. There are positive experiences, such as the opportunity to travel within Germany and the EU and thus get to know a new culture. Of course, there are also challenges that students face. This includes, for example, learning and strengthening the German language or getting used to climatic conditions.
The students discussed their experiences during the university semester in more detail in an exchange with the President of the German Jordanian University Prof. Ala'aldeen Al-Halhouli, the Director of the German Language Center Jacqueline Rogler, DAAD representatives Stefan Bienefeld and Leonie Schölen as well as Ruth Pappenhagen and Marie Dierck from the GJU Project Office.
The students gave a brief insight into the cuisine in the student dormitory, where Faisal has already cooked Jordan's national dish — mansaf — several times. Everyone found it astonishing that significantly fewer cats roam on the roads than in Jordan. The four students see challenges in finding a suitable internship within the university semester. With offers such as the GJU career portal, the Welcome Lunch or the Buddy Program, we try to support the team from the GJU Project Office - the students on their journey and to counteract the challenges.
Good luck!
